To give support and to give back to the community Betway has announced that through this initiative, it has raised R25 000 which will be donated to Wheelchair Basketball South Africa (WBSA) in the form of playing equipment.

That was in line with the FA Community Shield which is an annual soccer match contested between the champions of the English Premier League and the holders of the FA Cup. All proceeds from the game are distributed to charities, which are selected by each of the clubs who competed in the FA Cup.

The WBSA is the official governing body for wheelchair basketball in South Africa. The association funds leagues and competitions with help from donors and provincial governments. Saunders said the donation from Betway will go a long way in assisting them with their technical excellence programme for their officials. He said they have several programmes that they run throughout the year and this will assist with their officials training and equipment.

Betway South Africa’s marketing manager, David Rachidi said the donation was just another way of lending a helping hand to the growth of different sporting codes in South Africa.

He said there are so many organisations that do a lot of work within sport that goes unnoticed and associations such as WBSA are faced with a lot of challenges in administering and continuously developing the sport of wheelchair basketball.

According to Rachidi, as a brand that has community development at heart, they felt that it was important to lend a helping hand and play our part like they have been doing with other organisations. He said they believe such contributions go a long way in the overall development of sport.
