Sho Madjozi and AKA to represent Mzansi at the BETs

South Africans rally behind their own as they prepare to take to the world stage.

Sho Madjozi and AKA will be representing South Africa at this year’s BET Awards set to take place at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles next month.

These two were announced on Friday in Johannesburg along their African counterparts who will be representing the continent in this prestigious awards ceremony.

Sho Madjozi will be competing in the Best New International Act category with Teniola Apata from Nigeria, Headie One and Octavian from the UK and Jokair and Nesly from France.

In the Best International Act category, the Supa Mega has been nominated alongside Nigeria’s Burna Boy and Mr Eazi.

Dave and Gigs from the UK are also competing in this category with Aya Nakamura and Dosseh from France.

These two categories will be honoured live during the red carpet pre show which will be broadcast on BET Africa for millions of viewers to see.

This is the fifth time AKA gets nominated for a BET Award. “I must say it feels good being nominated again in the Best International Act category. I feel honoured to be chosen to go and represent my country and my continent amongst so many artists who could have been chosen,” said AKA.

He went on to emphasise that the nomination is all about the fans who have put him where he is today.

While the Sup Mega will be going it for the fifth time, Sho Madjozi will be doing it for the first time and she couldn’t contain her excitement.

For her, this nomination is not just about the world recognising her music, but it is more about the promotion of her culture and putting Africa on the international music map.

Her sentiments were shared by BET’s Monde Twala who said, “I think the most important thing is the acknowledgement that African talent is on par with that of the rest of the world.” Sho Madjozi and AKA are following on the footsteps of Black Coffee and Sjava who have won these awards in 2016 and 2018 respectively.
