Diepkloof duo exploring their creativity in order to generate income

Modernising fashion with a touch of paint

South Africa is by far one of the leading countries with the highest rate of unemployment, crime, and poverty. With youth being among the others the most common group to be affected by this predicament.

Therefore, the artistic duo, Rock fire, and Gee have taken it upon themselves to break the cycle and explore their creativity into generating income rather than succumbing to the ill-fated ways of making money.

As a result, they are revamping common accessories into lively and colourful masterpieces that are pleasing to the eyes.

The Diepkloof duo whose real names are Ngoako Moloto and Aubrey Sekgwale, with Rock-fire born and raised in Limpopo and Gee born and raised in the Free-State, their talent, and passion for arts brought them together and saw the birth of their brand “Pex” which was formally “distraction mode”.

“We started in June 2017, we will be celebrating our three years anniversary in June. When we started we were under the name: distraction mode and then we changed to Pex later. We want people to be aware of our brand and notice it as a local brand because it is inspired by Kasi lifestyle and honest hustling” explained Gee, one of the founders.

The duo has worked with notable local stars throughout two provinces including Gauteng and Free-State. “We’ve worked with big names such as Corner Freeway which is based in the Free-State, The Latest which is atBraamfontein as well as Kitcheners, but we were just placing our products there so that people could buy them, we’ve also worked with The Statement Company as well.” Said Rock-fire.

The duo also revealed that they are making pretty much good income from their accessories painting. However, the money they are making is actually going into their working studio as they are planning to expand and refurbish it to be a proper place where they can host proper exhibitions and sales as well.

Their products range from caps, T-shirts, sneakers and basically everything you want painted, even phone covers.

“A cap that’s painted on without any name customisation is R80. With a name customised it is R100. The same goes with a bucket hat, but it sells for R100 without a name, only paint and R120 with a name on. T-shirts sell for R200, if you bring your own it costs about R150. And then the shoes range from R120 to R350, depending on what type of shoes they are.” Concluded Rock-fire.

They use fabric paint when doing all the painting and customisation, so it doesn’t wash off. It doesn’t matter if you wash your item multiple times a week, it will remain colourful and lively. And the best part is that it does not stain other clothes when doing laundry.

The duo is not specifically constricted in Diepkloof, they travel throughout Soweto as they are trying to expose their brand and establish a strong market base in order to expand their business.
