More bikes for the community

"Who knows maybe in future will have professional cyclists straight from the group that received these bikes," said Nonhlanhla Makhuba.

Learners waiting to receive bikes.

A total of 193 bikes were shared amongst the learners and the patrollers, 43 for CPF and 150 for the learners. The day was graced with the presence of the City of Johannesburg MMC of Transport, Nonhlanhla Makhuba, Ward 29 Councillor Brenda Dammie, CPF cluster deputy secretary, members of South African Policing Service (SAPS), Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD).

Safety and protection of the recipients and the bikes were at the centre of the distribution, as bikes are stolen and sold. Dammie said they should work together as a collective with the Police, JMPD and Police to ensure that learners are safe while riding these bikes.

She said these bikes should not be imported to foreign countries because there were distributed to simplify things for the learners of Soweto. Makhuba said she is happy that the recipients are girls.

She alluded that they partnered with Qhubeka because they believe that cycling is an affordable mode of transport especially for short distances and it’s healthy.

“The city has been partnering with Qhubeka since and more than a hundred bicycles have been distributed to different communities,” confidently said Makhuba.

Over the years, 840 bicycles were given to the community of Orlando, The MMC said it’s the community has received a largest distribution. She urged the recipients to use the bikes wisely and look after them.

“Who knows maybe in future will have professional cyclists straight from the group that received these bikes,” she confidently said.

She pleaded with the learners not to sell them when they need extra cash because this gift is a life-changing mode of transport. She urged them to join clubs that teach more about cycling clubs. JMPD gave the learners’ safety precaution.
