Stationery donation keeps education moving for Pimville school

One of the learners in the Top 5, Noxolo Mzobe, said that this will make learning easier for them and vowed that he would continue making their school proud.

On Wednesday, January 16, the Eric and Charmaine Mabuza Foundation donated stationery to Grade 12 learners at Emshukantambo Secondary School in Pimville, to help them start their final year on a high note. The Foundation also gifted the school with two laptops which are meant to help management operate their day to day admin in a more modern way. The school achieved a 93,4% matric pass rate in 2018, and aims for a 100% pass rate this year.

The Eric and Charmaine Mabuza Foundation is a Corporate Social Investment (CSI) wing for Zamani Holdings, the mother company under which ITHUBA Holdings operates. The Foundation initiates and supports various charity programmes all over South Africa to help bring economical and emotional relief to those who need it the most.

The long standing programme under the foundation is the Eric and Charmaine Mabuza Scholarship Foundation which has been offering learners an opportunity to fulfil their dreams of furthering their studies since 1999. Although the initiative first targeted young people from remote areas in Mpumalanga, over the years the Scholarship Foundation has extended its reach to the rest of South Africa.

Speaking on behalf of the foundation and the Mabuza family, Khensani Mabuza said, “In a country where the cost of tuition fees has been increasing year on year, it is imperative for Corporate South Africa to step in and help. Currently, tuition fees are almost double of what they used to be just 11 years ago. That is a heavy burden for ordinary citizens to carry, particularly for those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.”

The foundation invited 18 of their university scholarship beneficiaries to the stationery handover event in Soweto, to emphasize the importance of paying it forward. Joining the team on this initiative were Metro FMDJ Ismail Abrahams, his wife Candice Abrahams who is the former Mrs South Africa and Mrs World 2016; as well as actor and voice over artist, Sisa Hewana.

The number of the stationery recipients at Emshukantambo Secondary School totalled 135 needy learners.

“Wow! This really means we are being recognised as a school, we just want to thank the class of 2018 for putting us back on the map. Look at us now, we are attracting good things. On top of the stationery the school gave them last week, our Grade 12 learners were given stationery, we really appreciate it,” said Pule Hlahane, the school’s spokesperson.

The donation included laptops.

One of the learners in the Top 5, Noxolo Mzobe, said that this will make learning easier for them and vowed that he would continue making their school proud.

“For me, it is not just about what we have received but also, the acknowledgement, it means our hard work is being acknowledged, so this will motivate us to achieve the 100% pass rate we aimed,” said another Top 5 learner, Samo Maphanga.

“We appreciate the stationery, this has served as a motivation for us to do more for our school. Way forward, we are going to focus and work hard,” said another learner in the Top 5, Nokwanda Mkhwanazi.
