LISTEN: Riverlea High School’s pass rate drops by 10%

Riverlea High School who had an 84% pass rate for the Class of 2017 dropped 10%.

As the class of 2018 received their results this morning, management of the schools took a moment to see their achievements and failures of the previous year. Riverlea High School who had an 84% pass rate for the class of 2017 dropped 10% with the Class of 2018.

We interviewed retired principal Hilton Arends, the acting principal Ashely Harris and the School Governing Body (SGB) chairman Lennett Louw of Riverlea High this morning (January 4).

Principal Arends said: “We have accepted the drop but I think for this year we will manage to recuperate and get back into the 80%. This is a bad sign but there are a whole lot of contextual factors that resulted in the 10% drop. I can say from a positive point of view that we did have all of our teachers, covering all of the subjects.”

When asked what the strategy for this year is, Arends said: “We are trying our utmost best but some of the learners do not want to attend classes. Some have no respect for the teachers, and we can only do so much but we need the parents to get involved.”

Acting principal Harris also added that maybe life orientation plays a major role.

“I don’t think our learners know how to study. I don’t even know if they know how to draw up a study timetable, hence, if you look at the other schools, you’ll notice a major drop and we need to teach these learners how to study because reading, alone, is not studying.

“We also need to look at the subject choices, if we look at physical science, that’s one of the subjects that we had a major drop and some learners want to do physical science and mathematics because of the status, some, unfortunately, cannot handle these subjects.”

Louw said: “I would like to see a change in the mindset of our learners’ parents. If we do not get the support from the parents then we going to have more problems. But I applaud the teachers and the principal for their hard work.”

The final word from the now retired principal was: “I just like to congratulate the teachers and the learners that passed. I would also like to say thank to parents who really gave us support and a thank you to the SGB. I wish Riverlea High all the best for this year.”
