SANBS kick starts annual blood donation drive

"Our blood donation drive initiative is targeting people from the ages of 16 to 65-years- old who are living a sexually safe lifestyle," Mlungisi Minomiya.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) kick started their blood drive campaign on November 7 and will end in January next year.

According to donor recruiter, Mlungisi Minomiya, they chose the Dobsonville Mall because they are targeting shoppers and pupils from nearby local schools.

He said, “Our blood donation drive initiative is targeting people from the ages of 16 to 65-years- old who are living a sexually safe lifestyle.

“This is the time of year where record numbers of customers are visiting shopping malls during the festive season.

“We take part in such campaigns because a lot of people go out for holidays during this period and there are a high number of road fatalities. The primary objective of the campaign is to save a life,” said Minomiya.

He said they are taking all the blood types during their campaign and added that blood type AB- is one of rarest blood types.

“We would also want to appeal to people who have O- type to donate blood. Blood O-type is a vital blood type because it can be donated to any blood type and save lives.

“We are encouraged about the change from a previously negative mindset towards donating blood which was prevalent in the black communities. Lot of black people are now donating blood recently, particularly here in Soweto. Previously, the majority of blood donors were white folks,” said Minomiya.

SANBS officials and staff will be available at Dobsonville Mall from November 6 to early January next year from 10 am to 3 pm from Monday to Sunday.
