Residents warned to be careful of criminals

People must stand guard at night and blow the whistle to Metro Police when they see wrongdoings.

Crime continues to be a big problem in Mapetla and residents are being affected by the robberies happening in their area. Recently the community was made aware of people robbing others at Mapetla Brazil Grounds.

This has gone too far that robbers are now targeting people at an abandoned building near Mapetla High School and the two passages at which leads to Mapetla High and Sedibathuto Primary. Residents say criminals are using the building to smoke substances and rob off people their belongings such as cell phones and wallets.

At the passages, people are using that way when going to various places and residents recently embarked on a cleaning campaign and decided to clean the passages cutting the long growing grass and bushes where they say criminals used to hide at night so that they can rob people.

They removed rotten foods, dirt and clothes at the passages as well. One of the residents, gogo Rachel Molefe said she lives near the building, known as Amafrica and she fears to move around at night since the building has become a crime spot.

“This building is near a school and many learners use the route when they go to school and come back. “Others use it when they go to work and we have heard a lot of criminal activities happening there,” she said.

Another resident and community leader, Moalosi Mathopa is one of the people who are concerned about the situation and said people must stop throwing food, dirt and clothes at the passages and should avoid moving around the building especially at night.

He said people must stand guard at night and blow the whistle to Metro Police when they see wrongdoings in the area and maybe one or few arrests will send the message.
