Getting creative in the hood

Kasi Creatives are here to change affect the entertainment industry.

Kasi Creatives is a non-profit organisation (NPO) which wants to help young up-and-coming artists in the Meadowlands community and surrounding areas reach their full potential.
They also seek to help the youth to showcase their talent and expose them within our communities after realising that unemployment has increased and it still going to take years before opportunities become available for everyone.
This NPO is headed by Nthabiseng Mahongo, Mbali Lwati, Mpho Kunene and Karabo Mahonko who are the brains behind Kasi Creatives.
Lwati said, “This is an NPO that will give them exposure for what they love doing and we are also a youth empowerment company which promotes arts and craft for the underprivileged who have fewer resources available to them.”
In previous years Zone Nine youth would host art festivals while being aware of the growing number of local creatives and they have decided to shift their focus to taking a more business-centred approach by selling their work and putting food on the table.

Mahongo added, “What makes us different from other organisations who deal with art is that we are passionate about this and for this reason we are passing the baton to the youth. It is not all about wanting to generate revenue, but giving much-needed exposure to the area. Why not bring Vilakazi Street to Meadowlands and have those tourists coming here to see the work produced by the youth?”
They group hosted their first event in Zone Nine on September 23 and invited local deejays to entertain the crowd with their entertainment.
The Ndofaya community jammed to the good music, and enjoyed the food on offer. Children were also accommodated in a child-friendly atmosphere.
