Business robberies at an all-time high in Ndofaya

A full crime report supplied by Meadowlands police on the recent robberies.

The owner of Sithole Buy and Braai was stabbed several times during an armed robbery which took place in Meadowlands Zone Four on September 17. According to police reports, three unknown armed men entered the Buy and Braai and demanded cash from the owner.

The men instructed everybody to lie down and the owner, who was also on the floor, was told to stand up. Police spokesperson captain Thinandavha Lufhugu said the robbers then demanded the owner’s firearm and managed to make off with an undisclosed amount of cash and car keys.

Lufhugu said the thieving trio fled the scene with the owner’s vehicle which is a red Mazda 323, registration MDY 431 GP. He added that one of the robbers stabbed the owner on the chest several times and the business owner was taken to hospital for treatment.

Another business robbery occurred on September 17 at Ndofaya Mall at about 07.40 pm. According to the police report, the victim, Boitumelo Matseba alleged that while she was busy placing a bet for customers she saw cashiers and customers fleeing the shop.

While she tried to close the till, she noticed a black male wearing brown trousers and a brown jacket checking the unlocked tills. The men had already ordered people inside the Superbet to lay down and they managed to take R2 219.

The men fled, and fortunately, no one was injured. Lufhugu said there were no cameras and asked the community to assist with information.



“It seems like business robberies are now becoming a trend in Meadowlands and we are hoping to make arrests soon,” he said.

On Sunday, September 16 at 11.59 pm, two unknown men entered the BP Garage in Reverend Modise Road next to Mzimhlophe Hostel, pretending to be customers.

It is alleged by the complainant Lesley Thandeka, that one of them drew a firearm and pointed it at the security officer. He pushed him into the corner of the shop.

Thandeka said, “One of the suspects ordered us to open the cashier’s drawer and they managed to take an undisclosed amount of cash.”

They managed to flee the scene, no shots were fired and there were no serious injuries sustained. Captain Thinandavha Lufhugu is requesting that anyone with information comes forward in order that police are able to arrest the robbers.

In a third incident, a 16-year-old boy was arrested for selling dagga at a Meadowlands High School on September 18.
He will be appearing at the Protea Magistrate Court on September 19 accompanied by his parents.

Captain Thinandavha Lufhugu said, “It does not mean that since the concourt has approved the private use of cannabis people should take advantage.”
