Qhobosheane Primary School brags a maths genius

This is the first time Qhobosheane Primary has gone this far with the Olympiads.

It is well known that mathematics competitions generate a lot of enthusiasm and curiosity for the subject, hence the introduction of Mathematics Olympiads in the education system.

Aimed at challenging participants’ mathematics problem-solving abilities, the competitions have many schools participating and Qhobosheane Primary School in Diepkloof Zone 1’s learner Amohelang Tshimong came out number 1 in the whole of Soweto and proceeded to the next round to battle it out with learners from different districts.

The 13-year-old Grade 7 learner from Orlando East said that she is aiming to be crowned this year’s champion of the Mathematics Olympiad.

“Competition is healthy, it makes you want to learn more and be the best you can. Last year I came out number 3 and this year, I am aiming to take the title and make myself, my school and my family proud,” said Tshimong.

“Although it needs a lot of practices, this year, it did not require a lot from me as I have learned most things in class. I am confident that this year I will come out number 1, mathematics is my favourite subject, I will always give it my all,” she added.

According to her mathematics teacher Antoinette Melato, Tshimong is a very quiet, obedient and intelligent learner, not only in mathematics but all the other subject.

“It is easy to prepare learners such as Amohelang as she is very obedient, what you teach her in class, she applies it whenever there is a need.

“Another thing is that, just like me, Amohelang takes these Mathematics Olympiad seriously. I prepared her well and I am very confident that she will represent us well,” said Melato.

This is the first time Qhobosheane Primary goes this far with the Olympiads, it is, therefore, a big deal for the school and will motivate other learners from the school to work hard.
