VIDEO: Workers will picket until change comes

"Until we are given attention according, we will picket and picket until change comes."

The workers at Baragwanath Hospital in Diepkloof took their working frustrations to the streets at the Hospital’s entrance where they promised to picket until the corrupt are removed from leadership positions.

The Deputy Secretary for the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU), Neo Mashike explained how they have attempted to have those accused of being corrupt removed from the hospital and placed under investigation and precautioned, however, Mashike said it was like their cries for justice and fairness fell on deaf ears.

Bheki Miya an [EPWP worker] complained about the allegations of nepotism in the hospital. Miya has been working at the hospital since 2013, with the same promise of being a permanent employee as everyone else, to no avail.

He has since lost his job and along with Joseph Moloka and Lorraine Ndi, who’ve both been rewarded with performance certificates by the hospital.

Ndi said, “I was told that my recommendation would earn me a job and help put food on my table, but now I’m outside the gate.”



Mashike elaborated how they were ignored by management at the hospital even after they reported what they believed were incidents of corruption.

The traffic at the hospital jammed for a moment as the police observed the picketers to ensure that no violence erupted.

Mashike said, “Until we are given attention according, we will picket and picket until change comes. They do not care about the workers and the people.”
