COJ prepares for the swimming season
MMC for Community Development wants all swimming pools ready on Spring Day
Spring is upon us and in preparation for it, the MMC for Community Development, councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba, embarked on an oversight visit to the City of Johannesburg’s Swimming Pools and Recreation Centres.
On August 22, Sifumba provided oversights in Region D of the City of Joburg. She looked at the progress regarding the state of readiness of swimming pools in preparation for the opening of the City’s Joburg swimming season on September 1.
Of interests were, Senaone Swimming pool, Noordgesig Swimming Pool Library and Hall, Pimville Library Recreation Centre and Swimming Pool, Orlando Swimming Pool, White City Arthur Ashe Tennis Courts and Library and Dobsonville Swimming Pool, Kopanong.
Noordgesig pool has been refurbished and will open on September 1, while Noordgesig Library is undergoing construction, and so far, it looks beautiful. Sifumba has urged the ward 29 councillor, Brenda Dammie, to emphasise to the community, the need to take care of the facility, to own it and refrain from vandalizing it, for it to remain beautiful and clean as it is.

Sifumba was impressed by the Pimville Libriary as the library Wi-Fi is fully functioning, and so far, the library is in good shape and the facility is working properly.
The only issue is that the fire extinguisher has expired, while the Pimville Recreation Centre is in bad state, the squash court is in a horrible condition, bird repellent needed to keep the hall clean, However MMC was impressed by the idea of the notice board at the entrance of the centre, just new information needed on the notice boards, such as posters alerting residents about Expanded Social Package and other programs.

Most City pools are open during the spring and summer seasons from September 1 to March 31 of the following year, to allow the residents of the City the opportunity to cool down at the pools. However, there are issues that may lead to some pools not opening on September 1.
The Orlando swimming pool is one of the pools that will not be opening on September 1. The pool will need to be resurfaced and painted and further notice will be given as to when the pool will be opened.
Heated pools are open throughout the year, but there are only a few of these.
Pimville’s heated swimming pool seems to be ready for spring and has some activities ready for the swimming season, the only issue the MMC raised was the state of the toilets.
Dobsonville public pool offers swimming lessons with trained lifeguards and a kiddies pool for the little ones. There are issues regarding the ceiling in the hall.

The city welcomes spring in splash, all are urged to consider safety measures such as, no diving, no pushing, no running and no glass in pool or deck area at pool.
