Skolowina Ruffle Challenge just may be the answer to improving township schools

"This initiative is one way of township communities doing things for ourselves without waiting for government intervention.”

Public schools in townships struggle with resources which hinders the mandate of teachers in performing their duty which is to educate and mould the young learners in their care. As a result of this, we are seeing the mass exodus of township learners enrolling in private schools away from the townships.

The Tumishang Project is on a crusade to redress this imbalance with the newly launched Skolowina Raffle challenge.

The lottery launch was held at the Tumishang Project Centre in Dobsonville last Friday and saw various stakeholders in education and schools in attendance.
According to the project founder Tumishang Chilwane, the initiative is aimed at raising funds for public schools in Soweto.

Tumishang Chilwane sells Rapelang-Semente the first lottery ticket at their official launch.

“Our target is to raise R 1 million for public schools in Soweto.

“We already have 20 schools participating in this initiative and they stand a chance to qualify for the first draw to be held later this year.

“The participating schools are from Snake Park, Dobsonville, Meadowlands and Soweto Deep.
“The winning school stands a chance to win R 50 000 and will be announced on November 10,” said Chilwane.

Tumishang Chilwane, Nyiko Chilwane and Sontaga Maswangayi.

He said each participating school has set a target of selling over 10 000 tickets to the public.
They also have agents selling the tickets to the public in Dobsonville Malls and in public spaces.

“Anyone who buys a ticket also stands a chance to win his or her share in a R 60 000 draw dedicated to the public.
“The winning school will only use the money for their individual school projects and nothing else.
“This initiative is one way of township communities doing things for ourselves without waiting for government intervention,” said Chilwane.

Skolowina Raffle Lottery ticket are already available from August 10 until October 31 and will be bearing the names of participating schools.
Chilwane urged the public to support this initiative which is aimed at improving the education of the black child in the township.
