Touching lives and making a difference the Madiba way

#MadibaMonth: 67 minutes.

Unity in diversity and sharing with your fellow countrymen is one of the principles former president Nelson Mandela held dear.

It is the same spirit that prevailed last Wednesday on Nelson Mandela Day in Slovoville when people of all races gathered at the Khanya Day Care Centre to help the needy.

Despite the area being one of the most isolated townships in Soweto, through sheer determination and perseverance they have spread the word and companies and learning institute volunteers assembled at the centre.

Their message of the day was clear: ‘Reaching out to our fellow countrymen and share the day with them the same way the late father of the nation did.’

A teacher at the centre, Yanela Kyeba said it was a great honour that Madiba’s ideas touched the people of Slovoville.

“We are amazed that we are today benefiting from the legacy of the late Madiba. Volunteers from Africa Food for Thought, Emerald Risk Transfer, Clover and the University of Johannesburg touched base with us by visiting our centre and sharing the day with us.

“They dedicated their time and effort to bringing a smile on the children’s faces and making this day a memorable day for our learners and community at large,” said Kyeba.

The volunteers donated stationery and party packs to residents and learners from the centre. They were also served lunch and about 200 people from the area were also served a meal by the team of volunteers.

Kyeba also thanked the volunteers as they were celebrating Mandela Day for the second time since the United Nations declared July 18 Nelson Mandela International Day in 2009.

Emmah Mutimutema, an Africa Food for Thought representative, said they supported five Early Childhood Development centres and 20 orphaned and vulnerable families in Slovoville.

“We choose to have Mandela Day in Slovoville in order to support the community we work in. The owner of Kanya, a creche we support, does a lot of other community engagement, support of the underprivileged.

“We served residents a hot meal, bread, chocolate, sweets and a fruit in support of this initiative,” said Mutimutema.

United in diversity for a good cause on Mandela Day.
