New safer, SASSA cards

"At least now we won't be dealing with affidavits every now and then." - Zenzile Tshabalala.

The long-awaited new South African Social Security (SASSA) card swop commenced and it couldn’t have been easier for the residents of Diepkloof who just walked into Diepkloof SAPS with their Identity Documents (ID) and old SASSA cards to do the swop.

One of the major reasons for the card swop was to end speed points and their advantage is that no debts can be incurred on the card and debits cannot be performed with them.

Nkakale Matloha of South African Post Office (SAPO) was thrilled to announce that the partnership between SAPO and SASSA is actually going through and that this would decrease the crimes committed against the old, disabled and vulnerable.

Matloha said, “We have begun with the card exchange at local police stations so that our clients won’t be in the danger of interception by opportunists, the procedure is very simple, you just bring your old card along with your ID.”

Tshegofatso Mothibe and Lebogang Parks made the process easy.

Zenzile Tshabalala of the Diepkloof Community Police Forum (CPF) was present at the station to make sure the whole process went on without any glitches, exclaimed how this card swop meant bad news for loan sharks who usually take advantage of the poor and needy.

Tshabalala said, “It is unfortunate for the loan sharks. At least now we won’t be dealing with affidavits every now and then.

“Even today we still have cases of people who can’t do card changes till today because their IDs are with loan sharks who have held on to them as leverage. Loan sharks should stop holding on to old people’s cards and the disabled. We are not against their business but holding on to people’s belongings is wrong,” said Tshabalala.
