A sigh of relief for terminally ill people

But the Diepkloof Soweto Hospice is in need of funding.

People with life-limiting illnesses can breathe a sigh of relief because the Diepkloof Soweto Hospice is still operating as a Home Based Care Centre.

Hlengiwe Dikeledi, the Palliative Services Manager for the centre invited people to make use of their services to prolong their lives.

The Diepkloof Soweto Hospice is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that is under Hospice Wits in Houghton. They currently do home-based care which allows people with terminal illnesses to register at the hospice to receive medical services.

Dikeledi explained that Illnesses classified under life-limiting are cancer, HIV, and AIDS, she said, “We treat them and give them remedies to ease the pain because these sicknesses cause patients severe consistent pains.”

Iris Hlole elaborated that any community member or family member can visit the centre at the intake to register a terminally ill patient.
Soweto has four nurses who are dedicated to visiting the patient’s homes based on the severity of the illness; a sister might visit often to keep track of the patient’s health.

Hlole said, “I’d like to emphasise that the hospital is open and not closed as it is rumoured. We want sick people to come and get help.”

Dikeledi reiterated the fact that the centre used to house patients without any funding, and this was strenuous to the Hospice since taking care of just one patient was costly.

“The hospice is in need of funding.”

Sister Rachel Mabena who works at the centre said, “Patients can also go to the nearest clinics which we have affiliations with to get more information. We even give injectables to the ones who can’t walk to the clinic.”

Nhlanhla Bulungwa said that he wishes sick people would accept their conditions and take medication to prolong their lives, Bulungwa said, “We give education and counselling to the patients because some sicknesses are not a death sentence.”
