Gallery: Soweto Youth Festival was a success

The workshop was set up to help elevate skills and shape youth culture, through music, leadership, fashion, design and art.

On June 15 and 16, in celebration of #YouthMonth, STYLAGANG along with Offlimit Communications came together to host the first Soweto Youth Festival at the Protea South Multipurpose Centre.

STYLAGANG, being the organiser of the event, is a creative collective from Soweto, founded in 2012 by childhood friends Mpho Makua, Kam Risenga, Tiiesetso Molefe and Swazi Nkosi.

The festival came about as an idea between these childhood friends who saw a need for creative expression and youth development to have a new home and be taken more seriously.

Introducing the first annual Soweto Youth Festival – a hangout spot for entrepreneurs, that aims to develop the social economy of Soweto, by attracting people with different artistic expressions, creative mindsets and passions.

Young people from all walks of Soweto attended the event. The two-day event was geared at giving back to the community. Soweto Youth Festival has partnered with My Township Schools Foundation (MTS), through which they mentored, motivated and guided learners in the duration of the festival.

The CSI effort will still continue to give back to the underprivileged, through a drive giving out food and clothes.

June 15 saw a wisdom of workshops hosted by a mix of culture shapers who are leaders in their respective industries. School children had the opportunity to hear first-hand, from the best in the game and be inspired in making their own dreams come true.

June 16 brought a host of activities and entertainment. From an array of urban fashion stalls to tantalising food to gaming sessions – each touch point at the festival was made to entice, express creativity and inspire a movement of forward-thinkers.

Continuing with the collaborative approach, the likes of Emtee, Gemini Major, Tshego, Okmalumkoolkat, Luna Florentino, Champagne 69, Manu Worldstar and Mblee were all on the lineup. DJs Vigilante, Slique and Vino amongst many were blazing the hottest tracks on the deck pro bono.
