WATCH: Jukskei residents in Bramfischerville angry at Eskom

Jukskei residents left in darkness.

The Jukskei area in Bramfischerville has been without electricity for the past three weeks. This has left residents struggling to survive as perishables and other foodstuffs decayed in their refrigerators.

According to a resident, Mokgadi Machaba, the problem started when several transformers exploded in the township.

She said, “We donated money per household and sent delegates to Eskom on more than one occasion.

“However, we didn’t get a desirable outcome from Eskom. That is what triggered the protest last Tuesday and residents closed down the streets in the township. Our aim was to get the Eskom leadership to listen to our pleas.”

Mhlonipheni Masekane said since the power outages, they have been using paraffin stoves to cook which resulted in the food smelling and tasting of paraffin.

He added that they did not have any alternatives but to continue cooking on paraffin stoves until the problem is resolved.

“We depend on buying food daily at the shop to cook at night because there is no electricity. The township is dark at night, the street lights are also non-functional and our WhatsApp is non-operational.

“We demand that Eskom come down here to check on all the transformers and fix them to return the electricity supply to normal,” said Masekane.

Brightness Ndlovu paid R95 to purchase 5 litres of paraffin which doesn’t last her family long. She said her child is no longer able to bath properly when going to school because the fuel is expensive.

“My child only gets a proper bath on weekends and I get a proper wash at work daily since the start of electricity bleak outs. We want Eskom to address this challenge with immediate effect,” said Ndlovu.

Attempts to get a comment from Eskom were unsuccessful before going to print.
