WATCH: Family panicky following a life threatening ordeal in White City

Fire leaves family traumatic and hopeless.

On June 22, midnight, tragedy befell the Khambule family in White City, Jabavu. It was around 2 am when the breaking of windows and throwing of ‘petrol bombs’ started. People in the family were asleep at the time of the incident.

It is alleged that a short man who wore a brown jacket was seen hurling a petrol bomb.

“We were sleeping when I heard the window break. When I opened my eyes I saw a fire. I urgently stood up, took the little child, woke up Sibongile Khambule and asked her to fetch a bucket of water in the kitchen.

“My grandchild was screaming in the backroom and shouted for help. We don’t know who could do such a horrible thing to us because we don’t have enemies and our neighbours can vouch for us,” said Dorcas Sebooa.

Sibongile said it’s going to take time to replace the damage since her sister is the only breadwinner in the family.

This is a traumatic situation for the family because they didn’t think that such a thing could happen to them.

“I don’t feel safe anymore. I don’t think I will forget this day for the rest of my life because I stay here and this house will always be a reminder,” she said.

Nhlanhla Khambule said he heard a child screaming and when he woke up to open the door, he heard his window breaking. Suddenly, there was a fire. When he opened the door, he spotted a short man who was wearing a brown jacket run out.

Police spokesperson captain Mpande Khoza said a case of attempted murder has been opened and they are investigating the matter further.

“We are appealing to the community to give us information regarding this incident,” said Khoza.
