Concealment of birth becoming prevalent in Soweto

A passerby discovers a foetus.

On June 13, a woman from Orlando East who was taking her child to a daycare centre spotted something that she thought was a doll only to find that it was a dead foetus that had just popped out of a blocked drain.

Thembi Shirinda said she could not believe what she saw. Shirinda decided to go closer only to find that the foetus had an umbilical cord and amniotic sac nearby. She went home to call her family to go to see for themselves and called the police.

Upon arrival, we found the Democratic Alliance Soweto East 1 acting Chairperson Tim Thema and the PR councillor of Ward 30 and 31 Kabelo Thobejane.

Thema said it was indeed a traumatic day for the community of Orlando to have witnessed such a terrible incident.

He failed to understand how women can do such a terrible thing. Thema said they expect police to investigate the case seriously. He said the police must find the perpetrator and ensure that they set an example to people who are still planning to commit such acts.

Police Spokesperson Monica Hangwani Confirmed that they received a call of concealment of birth and when they arrived at the scene, they found the foetus that had blocked sewage mainstream at Ngculu Street.

“We can’t tell where the foetus was coming from but an investigation has been launched,” said Hangwani.

It’s every women’s choice within her right to make that decision on whether they would like to abort or keep their baby.

Their choice must conform with Termination of Pregnancy Act 1996 and Termination of Pregnancy Amendment Act 2008. Abortion is not a crime in South Africa but becomes a problem when it is not done in a legal manner.

Dumping dead foetus in sewer drains have become a trend in most communities, a similar incident recently happened at Pimville next to a school.

Risks of late abortion, perforated uterus and infection, permanent uterine damage, damage to the cervix, hemorrhage, anaesthesia complications. Retained uterine contents, organ damage and death in rare cases.
