Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s 2018 youth essay writing competition

Young people to fight racism through writing.

Young people are encouraged to participate in the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s 2018 youth essay writing competition against racism. The essay can be in any of South Africa’s official languages, should be between 1000 and 1 400 words.

Entrants from the age of 15 to 21 years are encouraged to write essays that will focus on the three topics: A future free of racism, tolerating racism is racism, root out racism. Winners will be awarded laptops at the foundation’s annual lecture in October.

One essay will be allowed per entrant and essays should not contain any plagiarised content. According to Dawood Raphalalane coordinator said with this competition we hope to get an understanding of young people’s thinking about how racism should be rooted out of society, the implications of tolerating racism and what they think a future free of racism would actually entail.

“This competition is certainly one of a few, if not the only one in South Africa, that aims to understand the views of young people from across the country on racism,” said Raphalalane.

Entrants should ensure that they include their name, contact details (phone number and email address), physical address and a word count. All entrants must be contactable in the event that your essay has been selected.

The deadline for submission is Youth Day, June 16 and those who are interested should send their essays to the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation via email youth@kathradafoundation.org, post or hand delivery to the foundation’s office.
