Court employees respond to President’s call to ‘Thuma Mina’ [PHOTOS]

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s visit to Protea Glen two weeks ago inspired the launch of a clean-up campaign at Protea Magistrates Court in Protea North last week.

Employees at the court have launched a weekly clean-up campaign which will take place every Friday. “We realised that the environment we work in is not as clean as we wanted it to be so we decided to put an effort into it and make it the way we want it to be,” said Susan N’wa Maluleke Maswanganye, Area Court Manager in Soweto.

The employees have decided to sacrifice their hour lunch break each Friday to clean the outside area of the court.

This decision was inspired by President Ramaphosa State of the Nation Address (SONA) closing statement in which he urged all South Africans to play an active role in bettering the country.

The President quoted lyrics from the late Hugh Masekela’s song, Thuma Mina which translates into ‘send me’.

“Now is the time to lend a hand. Now is the time for each of us to say ‘send me,” he said in the SONA 2018. The employees subsequently took the decision to title their clean-up campaign, the ‘Thuma Mina Cleaning Campaign’.

“We took the decision to start this campaign three weeks ago but it was strengthened by the President when he was here in Soweto and he reminded us to clean our environment so we feel like we are on the right track,” Maswanganye continued.

The staff at the court are very pleased with the campaign and feel that it will make those visiting the court feel more welcome and will motivate them to work harder.

“I feel that we’re going to be more productive when we work in a clean place because a dirty place demoralises us. Members of the public will feel welcome because a dirty court most likely gives them the impression that we don’t know what we’re doing,” said Pinky Kgaile, Admin Clerk at the Protea Magistrates Court.
