A plan to resolve Chiawelo flats maintenance problem

Burst sewer pipes in Chiawelo Flats and lack of maintenance still raise a great deal of concern for the people who live at the place.

Burst sewer pipes in Chiawelo Flats and lack of maintenance still raise a great deal of concern for the people who live at the place. They are living in a stinking and flooded area.

The Chiawelo Civic Movement representatives together with Suzanne Clarke of Housing visited the area to check the facility and come up with a plan on how they can help.

Clarke said the conditions are bad and they will try and find out who owns the place and they will organise a meeting in March with the residents to find a way forward.

They will also help the occupants to get their title deed since they did not have and were living in the area for many years. Residents say their living conditions are becoming worse and children may be affected by the stink.

One of the residents, Xolisile Zondi said her flat is always flooded inside and she has to wipe the floor every day due to the burst pipes inside the flat. It has been several months since the pipes were burst and nothing has been done.

Ben Mkhabela, an old man who is also affected by the stinking floods said he cannot handle the smell and that has caused danger to his health.

The Ward 12 municipality once fixed the sewer pipes that have been leaking for quite some time but the same problem has occurred yet again.

The occupants have since complained about the maintenance of the flats and nothing has been done. Clarke said they will try by all means to get help.
