A Hair Thingy (WATCH)

‘A Hair Thingy’ is set to hit Joburg stages after a successful run on stages as far away as Polokwane.

There is never a dull moment in any coloured community. As many ‘coloured’ areas as there are in South Africa, they all have the quintessential ‘colouredness’ in common.

Steaming koeksisters on a Sunday morning, scrubbing floors while old RnB favourites belt out the hits on the hi-fi and sharing that tight bond no matter how many lemons life throws our way.

While things have certainly changed under the new dispensation, there are still some negative stereotypes associated with coloured people.

34-year-old scriptwriter, performer and playwright, Rudy Bessit aims to do away with these in his one-man show, ‘A Hair Thingy’ set to hit Joburg stages after a successful run on stages as far away as Polokwane.

Hair has always been a bone of contention in our communities and the play is aptly set in a hair salon-which is always home to the juiciest gossip-where Bessit explores the dynamics in a fictional coloured community through his portrayal of a number of characters.

He said, “I aim to take the production to theatres across South Africa to showcase the talent in our coloured townships by exposing our poorer communities to the world of theatre.”

So, whether you have ‘kroes’, curly or straight hair, ‘A Hair Thingy’ gives an in-depth, unique look on coloured communities by telling our stories in a relatable way.

Bessit will also be introducing crooner Roland Pietersen (35) who will provide musical entertainment through cover versions of notable RnB performers like John Legend, Brian McKnight and Luther Vandross.

A Hair Thingy will be hitting the Joburg stage on December 1 at Club Simply Blue, 36 Roger Street in Selby and tickets will set theatregoers back R100 per person at the door.
