ANC Ward 47 fails to form a quorum

The odds are against the African National Congress.

The odds are against the African National Congress (ANC) Ward 47 if they continue to fail to elects their new branch due to its constant failure to convene a quorum owing to non-availability of the organisation’s members.

ANC Ward 47 branch is currently under the organisation’s Ward Task Team administration, the Task Team mandate to seat in the office has already elapsed, urgent Biannual Branch General Meeting (BBGM) and Branch General Meeting (BGM) is expected to take place soon.

However, there are reports from within some quarters of the organisation that this year alone, BBGM and BGM has not taken place. Concern ANC members cited that, without hosting urgent BBGM and BGM, ANC Ward 47 is like the house without a roof.

If the situation continues unabated in the ward, it means ANC members in Ward47 will be members without a home where they belong to.

It is because of such enormous challenge the Task Team in Ward 47 tried to host BBGM and BGM last Sunday at Kopanong Hall to remedy the situation.

However, ANC members in the ward failed to convene a quorum, as a result the meeting had to be postponed.

According to Ward 47 ANC Task Team coordinator Tuis Nkutha, they have 262 ANC registered members in the ward, but only a few turned up for BBGM and BGM last Sunday.

“We then rescheduled for another day at Margret Gwede Primary School. We need to have at least 133+1 ANC card-carrying members of our Nichols Molokwane branch attend the meeting, so we could proceed with the BBGM and BGM on the day.

“We are also expected to elect the representative from our ward to attend ANC national leadership elections conference to be the host on 16-20 December at Nasrec,” said Nkutha. However, for that to happen, ANC Ward 47 members need to have a maximum of 133+1 members.

ANC members in Ward 47 might lose the chance to vote for their new top six if they do not reach a quorum in the next BBGM and BGM to be host at Magret Gwele Primary School.

Nkutha added that there are 135 ANC branches in Johannesburg Region, and only 128 ANC branches in Johannesburg Region including Ward 47 are in good standing.

Nkutha reminded ANC members that if they don’t attend the coming BBGM and BGM, they will lose their opportunity to send their representative to cast a vote on behalf of the branch for their preferred ANC presidential and national leadership candidates to take over from the current ANC top 6 members of the ruling party.

The non-availability of ANC members in Ward 47 for BBGM and BGM gives opposition parties hope that they might unseat the ruling party in case the ward councillor dies, being recalled or resigned.

In such situation, by-elections would be the host and the ongoing uncertainty might be a triumphing card for opposition parties in the near future.

ANC card carrying members in Nicholias Molokwane branch interested to participate in the coming BBGM or BBGM should contact Ward 47 WTT Coordinator Teis Nkutha at 084 243 0562.
