Soweto Country Club needs about R22.2 million to fly high
The Mayor’s Charity Golf Day is an annual charity fundraising event and one of the most popular events on the Cairns business calendar.
The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, hosted a Mayoral Charity Golf Day to raise funds for the upgrade of the Soweto Country Club, at the Killarney Country Club, on Friday, August 25.
The Soweto Country Club needs about R22.2 million to fly high. R17 million for upgrades, R2.4 million to build a conference centre, R1.8 million to erect a fence and R1 million to support the Andrew Mlangeni Chapter of the South African Golf Development Board.
Joined by the 2016 Joburg Open winner, Haydn Porteous, the 2008 Masters Champion, Trevor Immelman, the BMW SA Open Champion, Graeme Storm, the Soweto Country Club members Sipho Bujela and Musiwalo Nethunzwi, the Sunshine Tour and PGA South Africa professional Clifford Ndou and other Sunshine Tour and European Tour professionals, Mashaba teed-off at the Killarney Golf Course.
Speaking at the prize giving dinner Mayor Mashaba called on the local and international captains of the industry and the business community to dig deeper into their pockets to help the club reach new heights.
He said the Soweto Country Club has the same potential to be on the same par with the best golf courses in the world.
The evening was also graced by the City of Johannesburg Council Speaker, Vasco da Gama, members of the mayoral committee Nonhlanhla Sifumba and Ntombi Khumalo, the Golf RSA Grant Hepburn, Sunshine Tour Executive Director, Selwyn Nathan, the United Democratic Movement, President Bantu Holomisa, the Soweto Country Club Deputy, President Gopolang Nels and the African National Congress stalwart Andrew Mlangeni.
Nels said that the Soweto Country Club had been a beacon of hope for disadvantaged black professional golfers. He went on to mention the likes of the late Vincent Tshabalala and Theo Manyama, as being the Club’s products.
“This was a shock when I started, now it looks amazing. When I look at it now, I become proud; this is where I come from and when the clubhouse was just a shack members supported me in my journey from caddie to professional. It was the foundation of my success in Golf,” said Ndou.
Nathan said this was the opportunity for business to change the face of golf in South Africa.
“This is where the players come from, it is now our responsibility to put them in the right environment to hone their skills now at home,” he said.
