A new beat for Soweto’s Finest
"We have over eight new clients already so it's been amazing."
Protea born Soweto’s Finest have moved house and are now in Newtown Junction Mall for everyone to access.
The dance group previously had their studios at Southgate Mall but closed because they wanted change.
Njabulo Mahlaba, the group’s spokesperson said, “We felt we needed to be more centred in Johannesburg to give the East, West, South and North a bit of fairness because we were based in the south only.
“We wanted to be close to where the youth are. We are closer to Maboneng now and it just makes more sense.”
The new studio was opened on July 17 and is a bigger space than the previous one.
“We have over eight new clients already so it’s been amazing. We had several options for spacing but this one made more sense because it’s more central.
“There are new additions to the new studio as well like mirrors in the studio and new flooring.
“There’s a receptionist area, more dance genres have been added to the list, not just isibhujwa and hip hop, there’s contemporary, ballet and ballroom.”
Mahlaba spoke about how the first studio was a learning curve for the group as they have developed a proper structure for potential clients.
“There are registrations forms that people can sign. The growth is proper, and it’s very evident.
“I think the biggest thing that we left behind with the old studio is unprofessionalism, it was a learning curve, so the eight to ten months at the old studio has taught us a lot.”
The group is working a three-year-plan to achieve their goals, such as not closing down this studio, but building a franchise
around the province.
Besides physical structural changes, the group now have female choreographers, teaching dance on the floor to draw more ladies in for classes.
“Come through to the studio, there are ladies who will be teaching as well because we want to motivate the ladies to come through to learn some ballroom and Latin dance moves,” said Mahlaba.
Soweto’s Finest want to be in Newtown for as long as it takes to spread the spirit of dance among the youth.
An official launch of the studio will be held on August 11 where the group will be screening their documentary for the first time where DVD’s will be sold on site as well.
“Come dance with us, come learn, come get the latest moves, come get fit, come get healthy, get the summer bodies ready, that’s what it’s all about,” said Mahlaba.
