Health a priority for the youth

Soweto Netball Association (SONA) had a fun and educational day to celebrate Youth Day at the Elkah Stadium. Anova Health Institute was invited to educate the players about contraception, HIV and Aids and other sexually transmitted diseases.

The players were also given lessons on how to protect themselves in light of the recent incidents of femicide. Anova had brought their Social Workers and Nurses to address the players.

Anova Health Institute is a partner of the Department of Health and is dedicated to improving health, focusing mostly on HIV. It does this by facilitating health technology expansion.

“Fun netball games were played where we did not concentrate on winners and losers. On the day, we were just one big family. We had also planned to have aerobics on the day but unfortunately, there was no electricity at the stadium and we were unable to secure a generator for the music,” said Cecil Ramonyane of the Soweto Netball Association. Snack packs were organised for all who attended.

Some of the teams that were a part of the event were Orlando Gardens United, Rockers, Orlando, KYP, Zola Rise, Hellenic, Thabisong, PYL, Soweto Legends and Mighty Queens who were visitors from Region F.

Representatives of SONA stated that they were disappointed by some of the affiliated clubs who did not attend the event organised for them. They thanked the teams that participated as well as Anova Health Institute for honouring their invitation to the event.

The senior players showed that they still had what it took.
