Soweto: Here’s why there was a service delivery protest in Rockville

Service delivery protest breaks out in Soweto

A service delivery protest broke out in Soweto Rockville on July 1. Residents took to the streets and barricaded roads with burning tyres and stones caused traffic disruptions.

The protest comes after the city’s water entity Joburg Water, announced the discontinuation of the 6000 litres of free water.

“It’s painful because he didn’t give us a notice of the cancellation. The meeting about the cancellation was on the June 28 and July 1. In the early hours of these cold mornings the water was no longer available.”

“Many of us are unemployed so, we really can’t afford to pay the water; others are dependant on the social grant, pension and “FHA fee” how are we going to afford to buy water?” asked one resident.

Residents are calling on Executive Mayor, Herman Mashaba to address them as a community about the matter of the cancellation of the water as well as the late notice they received about the cancellation.
