Drunk driver kills two in Orlando East
Residents of Orlando East ended their weekend on a sad note as a speeder ran over two men.
Two people died in a road accident in Orlando East on Sunday night.
The two men whose age could not be confirmed were hit by a white Nissan bakkie while walking Mofutsanyane Street.
According to eyewitnesses, the two men were walking on the side of the road when a speeding vehicle struck them.
“It was like I was watching a movie. Everything happened so fast and I could not believe what I was seeing. It hit and drove over them.
“The driver didn’t even bother to stop but he just drove away, still speeding,” said one eyewitness who did not want to be named.
One of the victims died instantly, while the second one died in the ambulance while paramedics tried to resuscitate him.
The driver of bakkie tried to flee the accident scene but could not make it far as he crashed a few metres away.
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) was called to the scene and arrived on time to take the driver into custody.
This incident angered residents of Orlando East and caused them fear.
Police had to take the suspect away as a way of making sure that he was safe from a mob of angry residents who wanted to take the law into their own hands.
There were also unconfirmed reports that the same car injured two other people prior to the fatal accident at Mofutsanyane Street.
JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar confirmed the incident happened and that two people died but could not confirm the other two injuries.
“A drunken driver was arrested on Sunday night after he lost control of a white Nissan van and killed two pedestrians on the sidewalk of Mofutsanyane Street in Orlando East.
“The driver bumped the van on the tree when he tried to flee the scene. He was taken to custody at the Orlando Police Station for detainment,” said Minnaar.
