Ibhongo High takes Shakes Gwabini sports tourney

Gwabini is making his presence felt by giving back to the community even after the fame in his youth

2017 has proved to be a fruitful year for Ibhongo High School situated in Dlamini as they received the floating cup recently.

Last year the school alumni hosted the inaugural Shakes Gwabini sports tournament involving eight high schools including Ibhongo in the surrounding areas.

The high school won the tournament, and now Gwabini was a former learner at Ibhongo High and is a former Orlando Pirates player; he now sits as the Head of Sports Committee of the association.

According to the alumni, this is their contribution to the school and the sporting community, however, they do intend on expanding the sporting codes to make the tournament larger.

Simphiwe Mahlangu, a member of the association said, “We did not want to interfere with the studies of the learners so we hosted the tournament towards their final exams.

“This is a way of getting learners off the streets and providing other options that they can pursue.”

The school achieved an 85% pass rate from the 2016 class.
