KFC adds hope on #WFD2016

World Food Day was celebrated on Sunday this past weekend and Sowetans were not left out on the activities raising awareness about issues of food security in the country.

World Food Day is celebrated every year on October 16 coinciding with the founding day of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

This year’s theme is, “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too,” and it draws attention to the challenges of global warming which pose a threat to food security.

Add hope, a KFC initiative celebrated the day by unveiling a wall mural on Vilakazi Street in Orlando West which raise awareness about the importance of agriculture in achieving food security in this country.

The wall mural does not only demonstrate the impacts of the Add hope initiative which feeds 110 000 children everyday but encourages people to grow their own vegetables as well.

It invites Sowetans to take seeds from the tree which is part of the wall mural and grow their own tomatoes at home.

“October is Hunger Month and Add Hope is always raising awareness about the fight against hunger in this country which has about 3.2 million children who go hungry,” KFC sponsorship and CSI manager Cathy Qama said.

“Today was a great way for us to get the community involved through painting the wall mural and inviting them to take seeds and use them to grow their own tomatoes which they can use to feed their families.”

The wall mural which highlights the plight of hunger in this country was painted by local artists Vusi Khumalo and Sthembiso Dlamini.

Pimville Boys & Girls Club is one of the beneficiaries of the Add Hope campaign which is supported by KFC customers through donating R2 every time they purchase a KFC meal.

Qama said they don’t give children KFC but they emphasise on giving them nutritious and healthy food.

“We don’t give them any KFC at all. That is why today we’ve done the wall mural with the seeds to show that Add Hope gives nutritious meals,” said Qama.
