Soweto String Quartet founder dies

Remaining members mourn the sudden death of Reuben Khemese.

One of the founding members of the Soweto String Quartet has died in his home on Wednesday morning.

Reuben Malusi Khemese played the Cello and will be missed by the remaining members of the quartet, details on the funeral and memorial is yet to be announced.

Khemese died at the age of 62 in his home in Mulbarton and it is not clear yet what was the cause of death.

The Soweto String Quartet is known for their unique composition of strings with a mbaqanga beat, a classical string and a rhythm of kwela music.

The Quartet became a full-time professional band in1992 and rose to fame after performing at the inauguration of President Mandel.

Their last performance as a quartet was at the SABC concert earlier this month.
