The Old Mutual Soweto Race hosted a media launch at its new venue today at the FNB stadium.
The #PeoplesRace was launched at the FNB Stadium today the official sponsors of the race Old Mutual.
The organisers of then invite athletes to be part of the ‘#PeoplesRace: A Movement Greater Than .’
A major change in the Soweto Marathon in 2016 are this year’s hosts being the FNB Stadium in Nasrec commonly known as the Calabash.
“It takes part in a part of the country with unrivalled heritage and new race director canny Blumberg hopes the Old Mutual Soweto Marathon will become Africa’s version of the New York City Marathon.
“We would like this to be the Boston or New York marathon of South Africa , and having the start and start finish at the iconic stadium will most certainly assist with this,” said Blumberg.
The first race was hosted in 1991 with only 80 runners and progressed to 20 000 in 2015.
25 000 runners are expected to take part this year in the three races staged on November 6:
- The standard 42.2 km will start at 6 am
- The half marathon 21.1km at 6:30am
- And the 10km run at 7am
Registrations close September 5 and can be done online at www.sowetomarathon.com closing at midnight.
Manuel entries can be done at the Orlando Community Centre.
Six heritage sites will be on the marathon route to honour Soweto’s rich history.
