‘Public urged to heed EMS safety tips’

Fire may start small but you’ll be surprised of the damage it can cause.

Media liaison officer for City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, Robert Mulaudzi said EMS this winter has attended to a number of cases from people reporting fire incidents in various areas.

Mulaudzi said fires always break-out in different communities but reiterated that the tally increases rapidly during winter due to cold weather.

“Most reports come from people residing in informal settlements. Unfortunately, some of these fires result in the loss of life.

“Which is why, it is crucial, for the public to heed all the safety tips issued by the emergency management always,” he said.

Mulaudzi said according to examinations they’ve conducted, fire break-outs are constantly caused as a result of negligence.

“People leave heaters on, all day, and some leave paraffin stoves or candles unattended. EMS is doing all it possibly can to educate citizens about the dangers of negligence,” said Mulaudzi.
