Ward councillor organises clean-up campaign in Kathrada Park, Westside

Ongoing dumping in most areas of Westside have become a cause for concern.

Ward Councillor Susan Stewart and some residents of the community gathered to do another clean-up of the area that people travel through on a daily basis.

The clean-up campaign took place at the walkway in Kathrada Park just off Brown Street near Claremont.

“The walkway is filled with rubbish and has become a general dumping spot for people from the local community and suspected people from other areas.

“It has become another haven for rats that are plaguing the residents living in and around the area.

“There is really a huge challenge dealing with the ongoing dumping in Ward 82,” said Stewart.

In recent times, dumping in the area has become a cause for concern in the community because of all the health hazards involved.

Following the strike of Piki- Tup earlier in the year it has now become a habit for illegal dumping to take place on a daily basis in the Westside area.

“This ongoing health hazardous situation and it seems to be getting worse by the day.

“I appeal to our communities to please assist us in caring about our environment, as we all need to take the responsibility of keeping our community clean,” said Stewart.

According to the councillor ward 82 is starting to look like a landfill site instead of a residential area.

“I am working with Pikitup to clean up ongoing in the ward but sometimes it seems like we are losing the fight.

“I will never stop trying to make the difference but I ask the community to keep on securing a clean environment,” said Stewart.
