Netball not forgotten in Soweto

Ditloholo General Construction donated netball kits to schools in Soweto as part of their initiative to give back to the community.

As children prepared to go on their school holidays, Ditloholo General Construction (DGC) decided to give the pupils something to look forward to when schools open with a surprise donation for Faranani Primary School in Protea Glen.

DGC which is part of the Jozi@Work programme donated netball kits to three schools in Soweto.

Moeketsi Mokoena, managing director said, “We felt as we are working with the community, there are schools like Faranani and Lufhereng that we sometimes collect recyclable materials from that we could give back to as a community initiative, hence the donation.”

As first time donators, DGC usually clean and educate the community about environmental management, how to dispose of waste and the importance of recycling.

Now, they would like to shift their focus teach the schools that littering is not a good thing, and to focus on raising awareness on environmental education.

Mokoena said that decision to donate netball kits specifically is that there are too many initiatives focusing on soccer as a sport in townships and no other sports are being given the same attention.

“In my day, we had so many sports that we were involved in ,besides soccer, like volleyball and netball; it’s such a shame that that hype has subsided from all sports to only one.

Even if we look at our national netball teams, there are no players born and bred in the township because we are not making it a priority as a community to make our children feel there’s a future in the sport because we don’t pay mind to it,” said Mokoena.

DGC also donated to Slovoville Primary and Lufhereng Primary Schools; 30 kits were donated on the day as there are 10 players per netball team.

“We feel proud and happy about the donation that we have received from Jozi@Work because it further strengthens our relationship with a school and the programme.

We hope that this endeavour will not stop here, but will be a continuous programme that will assist the institution.

Pupils who have received the netball kit will use it appropriately as other school uniforms for other school activities, again we thank the programme very much for their contribution,” said Mzwabantu Madikane, principal of the school.

“We hope with this initiative grows as Jozi@Work and are able to donate to more schools in the future,” said Mokoena.
