It is not textbooks but Supplementary Work Books – GDE

DA says MEC Lesufi must walk the talk and get books into classrooms as soon as possible.

DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Education, Khume Ramulifho said party delegates revealed a warehouse with thousands of textbooks in Soweto, exposing GDE’s inability to improve textbook delivery systems to schools.

Ramulifho said: “The department must deliver textbooks and stop making excuses.

“In fact, education MEC Panyaza Lesufi and HOD Edward Mosuwe must take full responsibility for the department’s failure, take decisive action against district officials, and institute an intervention plan to avoid such failures from happening again,” he said.

He said all pupils deserve the tools for a quality education, and textbooks remain a key to their success.

“The DA will submit a host of questions to MEC Lesufi, asking him to explain why the books were not delivered, and what actions have been taken to improve delivery to this district,” said Ramulifho.

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Oupa Bodibe responded to claims about the discovery of thousands of textbooks in a warehouse in Soweto.

Bodibe said what the Democratic Alliance saw are Supplementary Work Books and not text books.

“Textbooks were delivery at schools a long time ago and classes resume as normal without any academic disturbance.

“We will, however, ensure that these Supplementary Work Books are delivery to the schools soon,” said Bodibe.
