77-year-old man finishes his matric

Vilakazi (77) says it is never too late to learn.

Lavis Vilakazi has gone against all odds, achieving his matric certificate for the first time after 77 years.

After dropping out of school at a young age, Vilakazi from Zondi 2 never let go of his drive to remain educated and relevant, even during old age.

Due to life circumstances, he had to stop schooling and find employment during the apartheid era and has never gone to school since then.

“My father passed away and my mother was unemployed, being a male in the family, I had to make a plan and find a job so that I can take care of my family.

“During my years growing up, I answered to my calling of becoming a preacher of the word of God.

“I have been a pastor for about 50 years now and I have a church at White City.

“One of the reasons why I decided to complete my matric is because I’m interested in furthering my knowledge in the word of God.

“So after doing my six matric subjects in CAPs curriculum over two years, my next step is to enrol at a theology school to further my education in theology.

“My advice to both the youth and the elderly is that it is never too late to learn.

“Moreover to the youth, my wish is for them to realise that they are exposed to more opportunities so they should value education because it is the basic key to all the things that can make one successful,” said Vilakazi.
