Victory for parents as MEC removes #Noordgesig principal

Principal to face disciplinary hearing and school finances to be audited.

The circumcision debacle at Noordgesig Primary School has resulted in the removal of the principal from the School.

The decision to remove Cindy Tsotsotso and her two deputies from the school was taken by Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi on Thursday.

This comes after angry parents presented the MEC with a memorandum of demands early this week.

Their anger was triggered by a circumcision trip organised by the school which went horribly wrong last month.

It led to parents demonstrating outside the school demanding answers from the principal as to why their children were taken to a place unknown to them and the school.

The situation got worse and the MEC had to go to the school to meet with the parents. They then presented him with a list of their grievances which were not only about circumcision.

Some of the demands outlined in the memorandum by parents include demanding a full report on school finances and the removal of the principal from the school.

Parents also raised a vote of no confidence with the current School Governing Body (SGB) and demanded that it be dissolved immediately.

The MEC responded to this demands by removing the principal and her two deputies from the school. He went on to promise parents that he will soon be appointing an independent company to do a forensic audit of the school finances.

“As the MEC for the Education Department in this province, I have taken a decision to remove the principal and her two deputies from the school. She will be facing a disciplinary hearing for her role in the circumcision saga,” said the MEC.

In the meantime, an acting principal will be appointed to take over the running of the school. There was jubilation and ululation from residents who filled the Noordgesig Hall when these announcements were made.

One of the parents Octavia Petersen said, “I couldn’t feel better and happier. I would like to thank the community for standing together through all this. I hope from now on we are going to go on like this united forever.” Petersen has been on the front line since the fight started last month.
