IPID investigates police brutality

Family of a victim who was allegedly shot and injured by police has opened a case with IPID.

Colonel Noxolo Kweza from the SAPS provincial office for corporate communications confirmed that Gauteng police have tasked a senior officer to head a team that will investigate the circumstances that led to an incident where a Soweto man was shot and injured allegedly by police at the weekend.

“The man was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds to his arm and was charged with possession of stolen property.

“Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba has appointed the cluster commander of Moroka to investigate the matter,” said Kweza.

Kweza said the family has opened a case with the police following the attack and the docket was picked up by Independent Police Investigative Directorate

“Police are also busy analysing the video in order to establish what exactly happened. The alleged incident is said to have happened during the early hours on Saturday in Dlamini, Soweto.

“This was after police were involved in a car chase that started in Bertrams. The owner of the car which was hijacked was shot during the hijacking,” she said.
