Expo Centre to host The People’s Race

The Soweto Marathon will start and end at the Johannesburg Expo Centre and registration is still open for participants.

The Johannesburg Expo Centre (JEC) has been chosen as the official venue partner for the Old Mutual Soweto Marathon.

The People’s Race takes place on November 1, when runners of all descriptions will take their marks for one of Johannesburg’s most popular races.

Widely considered as a bucket list item for many South African runners, the Old Mutual Soweto Marathon promises to be another memorable experience for all who take part.

The race will begin and end at the Expo Centre and runners may choose to complete one of three distances, 42.2km, 21.1km or 10km.

“We are happy to host this incredible event,” says JEC CEO Craig Newman. “It’s a wonderful race with a great atmosphere that has runners returning every year to take part once again. There’s also a wonderful sense of community spirit that is tangible and endearing.”

Sello Khunou, Chairperson of the Soweto Marathon Trust said they are happy to be back at the Johannesburg Expo Centre for the start and finish of the marathon.

“This venue has been a part of the race since its beginning and it really is the perfect venue to be the host of this historic race,” said Khunou.

True to tradition, the marathon will connect runners from all over the world to six significant heritage sites dotted along the 42.2km marathon route including Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication in Kliptown, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, Regina Mundi Catholic Church, Morris Isaacson High School and Vilakazi Street.

This year the 10km route will also take runners into Diepkloof while the 21.1km route will run past the Orlando Stadium and through Orlando.

For those runners who have not yet registered, the good news is that registration for pre-entries has been extended to October 19.

This will ensure that all athletes have an opportunity to enter before the big day.
