Today is #WorldTeachersDay

The role of teachers in building sustainable societies is being recognised today.

The United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) declared October 5 as World teachers’ Day.

This is the day dedicated to raising awareness and appreciation for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development in the world.

Under the theme, “Empowering teachers, building sustainable societies” teachers are commended for the role they play in building sustainable societies through education.

According to UNESCO, “It is recognised that teachers are not only a means to implementing education goals but they are the key to sustainability and national capacity in achieving learning and creating societies based on knowledge, values and ethics.”

To achieve the goal of universal primary education by 2020 countries will need to recruit a total of 12.6 million primary school teachers.

World Teachers’ Day highlights the importance of empowering teachers in a bid to achieve quality education and sustainable societies.

Pule Hlahane who is a teacher at Emshukantambo Secondary School in Pimville likes the idea of having a day to celebrate teachers.

He said, “It’s a good thing to have a day where teachers are celebrated because of the impact they have in societies.  People need to really appreciate teachers for what they do for our communities.”

He encouraged others, especially the youth to join the profession and make their contribution in building sustainable societies.
