Using “dumping spots” to create mini parks

Soweto Environmental Forum gives eco-guides to the community.

Soweto Environmental Forum, which is part of the Jozi@Work cleaning project is using illegal dumping spots to create mini parks.

As part of the cleaning project, after cleaning open spaces, they rehabilitate them into something that will stop illegal dumping from occurring again.

In Protea Glen Extension Two and Phase One, they have created mini parks out of the open spaces where people used to litter.

Gift Malapane, supervisor and director of the Soweto Environmental Forum in Extension One to Extension Four encouraged people to create good things out of the open spaces instead of dumping on them.

“As we are fighting global warming and climate change, we encourage people to stop littering in open spaces but do good out of them.

” They can create mini parks, car washes, food gardening and many other things but dumping,” said Malapane.

The Forum is also educating the community about recycling and how to separate waste within their households.

” We also offer eco guides to the community, we go house to house to teach them and provide plastics to separate their waste and collect it the week after,” said Malapane.

The community is encouraged to cooperate with the forum through their Eco guides and participate in clean up campaigns.
