Watch: DA condemns the disruption of schooling in Soweto

DA accuses government of making false promises to pupils.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has come out and condemned the disruption of learning at some Soweto schools which happened on Thursday, July 23.

The opposition party went on to criticise the government for falsely promising pupils tablets.

This follows Thursday’s disruption of classes in several Orlando schools where pupils were demanding that they all be given tablets.

Pupils were taken out of classes to join the march.

They had planned to march to Pretoria to deliver their grievances to the Department of Basic Education.

DA’s Tshepo Mhlongo said, “We welcome a paperless SA and condemn all protest that destroy our infrastructure.

“The government promised that all students will have iPad or tablets but these are false promises.”

He went on to say the reality is that there is no budget to provide tablets to all schools for each pupil.

“The approach is to roll out the programme in phases. Like Grade 12 learners, then Grade 11 etc, however, the department failed to install all facilities as promised on Monday.

“We support the initiatives, but it must be well managed,” said Mhlongo.

The department of Basic Education could not be reached for comment.

The department only issued a statement on Thursday afternoon condemning the disruption of classes.
