South Africa with a chance to make history once again

The first Commonwealth Games in Africa may be hosted by SA.

Five years ago the country made history by hosting the first FIFA Soccer World Cup on African Soil.

This year South Africa is in a bid to make yet another history by hosting the first Commonwealth Games in the African continent in 2022.

Commonwealth Games are athletic games which are held once every four years.

53 Common Wealth Nations participate in this sporting extravaganza.

Commonwealth Nations is made up of 53 countries which are former British colonies.

These countries are united by language, history, culture, and their shared values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

On Wednesday, July 15, the Commonwealth Games Federation delegates from Africa and Asia arrived in Durban for assessments.

This means that the country’s bid to host the games are at an advanced stage.

The delegation will be assessing stadiums and other facilities essential for a big sporting event like the Commonwealth Games.

The country’s fate will be decided in September at the General Assembly in New Zealand by vote.

KwaZulu Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu gave a warm welcome to the delegation which is expected to spend Mandela Day in the country.

Mchunu said, “The Commonwealth Games in 2022 will assist in ensuring the promotion of the values of Madiba.”

Mchunu ensured the country and the delegation that the country is ready to host the games.

“Plans are already in place to ensure that we welcome the international community during the Commonwealth Games in 2022,” said Mchunu.
