UPDATE: Mob justice in Protea
Community held thugs hostage before police arrived.
The community of Protea South Informal Settlements went on a mob justice rampage after a woman screamed for help when she discovered a man leaving her shack with her grass cutter.
The woman was outside hanging her washing when she saw the man leave her shack.
The community came to her aid and managed to capture another three “thugs” and held them hostage next to the Protea Clinic.
They continuously assaulted them until one of the men died.
When the police came to the scene, the community stoned police in an attempt to prevent them rescuing the men.
It was only by using force that the police managed the rescue the surviving three men.
The men were badly injured and are currently in police custody.
A case of murder has been opened and no one has been arrested thus far but the police strongly condemned the incident.
” We as police strongly condemn the use of mob justice to solve crime.
” We appeal to the community to report incidents of crime,” said captain Mpande Khoza of Moroka SAPS.
