‘Customers must know their rights’

Consumers encouraged to know their rights.

The Consumer Affairs Unit has come down hard on local shops in the townships that overprice their products.

The unit highlighted the customers’ rights which are mostly infringed by shop owners in the township.

According to the customers’ rights, it is illegal to sell a product at an extra price than its original price.

Lindiwe Tawana of the Consumer Affairs Unit said that it’s about time customers exercise their rights and stop being robbed.

“If an item is priced at a certain amount like airtime, you must buy it at that amount and not let shop owners rob you by saying you have to pay 50c extra.

“It is not your problem as a consumer that the seller will lose profit, if it’s written R5, then you must pay R5,” said Tawana.

There is an RRR Policy for consumers which state that whatever you buy and if not satisfied, you have a right for Replacement, Repair and Refund.

Tawana advises all customers to be wise and responsible by knowing their rights and exercise them accordingly.
