Freedom Charter Garden officially opened

Plans to give Kliptown a facelift underway.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Mpho Parks Tau yesterday launched the Kliptown Development Project.

The launch was held at the Soweto Hotel in Kliptown.

Under the project, the Walter Sisulu Square will now be known as the Freedom Charter Garden.

The Mayor officially opened the garden and encouraged people to take care of the monument.

The Kliptown Development Programme does not only end at the Freedom Charter Garden, but includes RDP houses and railway crossing bridge in Kliptown.

The programme was initiated in 2010 with a projected cost of R60 million.

Tau said, “These funds came from the Gauteng Provincial Government and the City of Johannesburg. They were largely spent on housing developments, informal trading facilities, development of heritage sites, storm water upgrades, and social amenities such as parks and complete streets.”

More funds will be injected in the human settlement development project which is aimed at providing Kliptown residents with better accommodation.

Tau did highlight the importance of such developments in an area which played a vital role in the country’s struggle against apartheid.
